话说拿破仑除了擅长打仗、当皇帝，还精通数学，同时还十分喜爱文学和宗教，但是很少人知道他的英语水平怎么样。这个问题现在有了答案：在上周日法国议会选举那天，在巴黎枫丹白露进行了一场拍卖会，法国书信和手稿博物馆以32万欧元的价格拍得了拿破仑写于1816年3月9日的一封英文信件手稿。
这封英文信件的内容是这样的：

这封信的一开始提到it is two o'clock after （凌晨2点），而结尾提到four o’clock in the and half（早晨四点半），可见花了不少时间写这封英文信，可是错讹颇多，一些句子恐怕只有懂法语的人才能猜出来个大概。比如i go then the night into to cause with you一句中的cause就是法语“说话”（）的意思。法国媒体上发表的法文“翻译”如下：
comte las cases, écrit l' dans un qui mérite d'être é, j'ai assez dormi, je viens donc finir la nuit à l'intérieur pour avec vous. il dans sept jours un d' qui nous fera le récit de tout ce qui aura été jusqu'au jour du mille huit cent seize. vous aurez dans ce cas une de las cases qui vous qu'elle-même bien se si elle avait votre cas. mais je me et vous aurez de quoi faire à me .
比如一开始的这句i have enow sleep，要看上下文才知道不是“要去睡觉了”，而是“睡够了”（i have sleep）。接下来的he shall land above seven day a ship from that we shall give from who this shall have been even to day of first eight ，大意应该是“七天后会有一艘从欧洲来的船告诉我们带来自从1816年1月以来发生了什么”。结尾的一句but i tire and you shall have of the ado at my的意思是他很疲倦了，而且认为收信人恐怕也得费点神才能看懂他要表达的意思。
收信人是拿破仑的英语老师拉斯加斯伯爵，在滑铁卢之后于1815年10月陪同拿破仑一起被英国人流放到大西洋的圣赫勒拿岛。在岛上苦闷的日子里，拿破仑开始潜心学习敌人的语言——英语，这封信实际上算是一份学生作业，拉斯加斯伯爵收到后做了批改又送还给了拿破仑。据这位老师当时的记录，拿破仑学习英语很努力，每天花三到五个小时，尤其是口语进步很大。
然而，拿破仑的英语最终也没有在和敌人打交道中派上用场。1821年5月5日，拿破仑在流放中病逝，终年52岁。
